Last Updated: 07/17/08 Here's where I tell you what I'm working on. These may be something that never see the light of day elsewhere. Nevertheless, I'm expending energy on them. I've decided to name the series of fantasy books about Katya, "The Witches of Galdorheim." With this title, I'll be free to write about any and all of the fascinating characters. The first two books belong to Katya, of course. However, I'm already getting requests for a book all about Rune. He's pretty popular with the teen set, so why not? The Witches of Galdorheim 2 - Midnight Oil: The further adventures of Katya. I'm done! Well, with the first draft anyway. If you like the Loch Ness monster, Selkies, dragons, volcanoes, and other cool stuff, you'll like this book. Word Count: 47,600 AND I'M DONE! Okay, here's the first chapter. Let's see if anybody actually clicks to it. The Witches of Galdorheim 1 - Bad Spelling: All of Katya’s family are either witches or warlocks, depending on their sex, of course. Katya is sixteen and really ought to be able to turn a rabbit into a toad, but things just don’t work out for her. What she gets is a slimy green hopper. That’s the good part. Unfortunately, it also has long ears and fur. That’s bad spelling. 45K words and it's done! Would you like to read the first chapter? Just click this link. The Faiza Chronicles - Quest for the Simurgh - 36,000 Word Middle Grade Fantasy: QUEST FOR THE SIMURGH's world is far away from Hogwarts, Euro-centric fantasy, and Middle Earth. However, it contains the themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the age-old conflict between good and evil common to most juvenile fiction.
Complete at 37,000 words, this is a middle-grade fantasy novel, set in the Aladdinesque world of Persian mythology. The story follows four teenage friends who are drawn into a war between the gods and demons.
The village magician, Wafa, has gone missing. His star pupil Faiza, a farmer’s daughter, thinks he has left a clue for her on a page of the Magicalis Bestialis. With the page open and marked with an X, she believes Wafa is telling them to seek out the Simurgh, the mythical birds who possess all the knowledge of the universe. She convinces her three classmates that they must seek the help of the Simurgh to find their teacher.
She leads the boys on a difficult journey into the mountains in search of the elusive birds. A strange little man becomes their guide; they do not know he is a spirit leading them toward a battle between good and evil. Spirits, gods, and demons confront the four friends, who are being set up by otherworldly forces for a much larger task than finding their teacher. The students were chosen to take sides in the battle which might spell the end of the world--a battle between the demons and the spirits.
The demon god of war, who binds two of the adventurers to his side, wants to destroy the spirits that hold the souls of humankind. Facing off in battle against her friends, Faiza must find a way to bring them back to the gods of light. With the help of Wafa, the magician, she rescues the boys from their bondage. Only then can they stave off Armageddon and find the Simurgh to learn their personal fates. The Faiza Chronicles - The Tablet of Destinies: Definitely a working title here. I decided to follow up on Quest for the Simurgh, since I've grown fond of the main character in that book. Plot is a bit rough right now, so I'll wait to post until it gels a bit. Just FYI, the Tablet of Destinies is from Mesopotamian mythology. It supposedly gives the possessor dominion over the entire Cosmos. You might imagine that it falling into the wrong hands would be a very bad thing. I'm putting this on the back burner in favor of the Bad Spelling sequel. |
